Fans of "Outlander" are aware that the programme and the books that served as its inspiration are coming to an end, but Starz may be in danger of creating a "Game of Thrones"-style situation given that the popular series' final season will end without Diana Gabaldon's last book to serve as a guide.
Fortunately, it appears that both parties are confident that calamity will be avoided.
"Outlander" executive producer Maril Davis spoke on a panel regarding series endings at the ATX Television Festival in Austin, Texas. She discussed how the show's conclusion will differ from that of Gabaldon's tenth and final book, which has not yet been given a title. What Davis had to say about it is as follows:
Therefore, it appears that the different ending was chosen consciously and on purpose. George R.R. Martin finished "The Winds of Winter," the final season of "Game of Thrones," years before it was finally released. Given the response from viewers to the last episodes, deviating from what Martin was able to tell David Benioff and D.B. Weiss was quite devastating.
Can Outlander avoid the issue with Game of Thrones?
Now, just because "Outlander" season 8 is about to enter a scenario that appears to be similar to "Game of Thrones" season 8 doesn't always mean that they will share the same fate. Gabaldon has given this some thought for quite some time.
The decision by Starz to end the series with the next eighth season has, admittedly, shifted things a little. Gabaldon compared her situation to "Game of Thrones" in an interview with The Guardian in 2021, seeming incredibly sure that a catastrophe can and will be prevented.
Her optimism finally turned out to be a little bold, as her ninth book won't be out before the exhibition is through. Having said that, it is obvious that she has been in contact with Davis and the other showrunners.
The alterations are being made to maintain the conclusion of the books while obviously taking Gabaldon's vision into account. We'll watch to see if they succeed. Let's not get too far ahead of ourselves though because we still have to finish season 7 of "Outlander" first.
