According to eyewitnesses, the fire began in a shop at approximately 7:00 a.m. on Sunday, December 10, 2023. Unfortunately, it quickly spread to other shops, resulting in the destruction of both shops and their merchandise.
During an interview with OTEC News reporters Jacob Agyenim Boateng and Maame Akosua Gyamfuaa on Sunday, several witnesses expressed their belief that the fire may have been caused by an electrical fault in the shop where it originated.
It was disclosed that a significant amount of items, worth thousands of Ghana cedis, were destroyed by the fire.
Officials from the Ghana National Fire Service intervened to prevent the situation from escalating.Several affected victims shared their unfortunate experiences with OTEC News. One individual mentioned, "Upon hearing about the fire, I hurried to the market in hopes of salvaging some of my merchandise.
However, to my dismay, everything in my shop had already been destroyed by the fire."
Someone mentioned, "I have replenished my store with merchandise worth a significant amount of money." I purchased some items using my own funds, while others were acquired on credit. Unfortunately, I have misplaced all of them.
The Deputy Ashanti Regional Fire Commander, DO1 Rashid Missaw, has stated that investigations into the fire incident have been initiated.The cause of the fire is currently unknown and is being investigated.
DO1 Rashid Missaw mentioned that it required the assistance of five fire tenders and numerous fire officials to successfully extinguish the fires.
He mentioned that their officials faced challenges in accessing the epicentre of the fire, which made it difficult for them to promptly bring it under control.
